Junior League’s Child Health and Wellness Committee:
Childhood obesity is a raging epidemic in every developed country. The Junior League of Knoxville has teamed up with the Knox County Library System to present the Kids in the Kitchen Stage at the annual Children’s Festival of Reading in May at World’s Fair Park. JLK also provides grants to promote children’s health and wellness in our community, partnering with local organizations prevent and reduce childhood obesity within our community. Recent grantees include Girls on the Run, the YWCA of Knoxville, and the Boys and Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley.
What can we do together in the fight against childhood obesity? Let’s start by involving kids and their parents in a hands-on environment that actually focuses on preparing healthy foods. The goal of the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. and its member Leagues, is to promote child health and wellness by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, therefore preventing obesity and its associated health risks.
